This tool compares your prescription with published manufacturer or lens-provider ranges. It is not optical advice and does not replace a dispensing optician. Use a current prescription and ask your dispensing practitioner to confirm the applicable prescription-age and supervision requirements. In the UK, prescription spectacles for anyone under 16, or registered sight impaired or severely sight impaired, must be supplied by or under the supervision of a registered practitioner.

What the checker is

A comparison of the numbers you enter against the lens range each manufacturer or lens provider has published, with the source and the date we last read it. It answers one question: do these numbers fall within or outside that published range?

What the checker is not

• It is not a sight test, a prescription, or a dispensing service, and it does not sell spectacles.
• It does not judge whether a pair of glasses is right for a particular person, which lens index anyone should choose, or what anyone's pupillary distance is. Those are decisions for a registered dispensing optician or optometrist who can see you and your prescription.
• It does not know about your frame fit, your face, your eye health, or anything not on the prescription card.
• A manufacturer may fit a prescription outside its published range, or decline one inside it, for reasons it does not publish. The published range is the best public information, not a guarantee either way.

Prescriptions and the law in the UK

Use a current prescription and ask the dispensing practitioner to confirm the prescription-age requirements for your order. The College of Optometrists' guidance (A358–A360) distinguishes unregistered sellers from registered practitioners: unregistered sellers must not dispense prescriptions more than two years old; registered practitioners may use an older prescription in exceptional circumstances when it is in the patient's best interests. A prescription under two years old is therefore not a universal legal requirement for every UK dispense.

The supervision requirement is separate. In the UK, prescription spectacles for anyone under 16 or anyone registered sight impaired or severely sight impaired must be supplied by, or under the supervision of, a registered optometrist, dispensing optician or medical practitioner. Ask a registered practitioner to arrange any required supervision before ordering. See Opticians Act 1989, section 27.
