Smart Specs Check

Prescription Smart Glasses Fitting Guide: What to Check Before You Buy

The short answer: you can order a complete prescription pair, have replacement lenses made for a supported frame, or use a model-specific prescription insert. First confirm the exact glasses and supplier, then arrange the measurements, lens installation and final fit. Glasses with a display also need their display position checked.

Compiled by Smart Specs Check, run by Sam at Swansea Digital. Sources checked . Based on published guidance, without hands-on testing or professional optical review.

A prescription compatibility result is a starting point. This guide explains the steps between that result and receiving your glasses. Your lens supplier or dispensing optician confirms the actual order and fitting.

Four separate checks before you buy

1. Prescription compatibility
Does the named supplier accept your full prescription and lens type for that exact model and country? An accepted sphere value alone does not settle the order.
2. Lens manufacture and installation
Who makes the lenses, what do they fit into, and who installs them? A lens order may need a frame, an insert carrier or a complete glasses order.
3. Physical fit and comfort
How does the frame sit on your nose and ears? Discuss slipping, pressure and clearance with the fitter. Ask which adjustments the manufacturer permits for that frame.
4. Display alignment, where applicable
Can you see the intended display clearly in the position in which you wear the glasses? A prescription lens order and a display setting are different parts of the fitting process.

Camera/audio glasses and display glasses have different needs. The Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 lens routes below concern camera/audio glasses. Even G2 and XREAL One Pro have displays to account for as well. Do not transfer fitting instructions from one product to another. See the Ray-Ban FAQ, Even G2 guidance and XREAL guide.

From a compatibility check to fitted glasses

  1. Identify the exact glasses. Save the model, generation, frame code and size. For inserts, check the carrier version too. Use the model pages to keep similarly named products apart.
  2. Check the whole prescription and intended use. Use the checker, then ask the supplier to assess your prescription and chosen lens type. Explain whether you want everyday glasses, reading support or a display for particular tasks.
  3. Agree the lens route before buying the frame. Confirm whether you are ordering finished glasses, replacement lenses or an insert. Establish who installs them and whether you must send anything away.
  4. Arrange the fit and measurements. Book an appointment if required, or follow the supplier’s measurement process. ABDO’s dispensing guidance places frame fitting before lens-centration measurements, so those measurements reflect how the frame is worn. Source: ABDO.
  5. Confirm the complete order in writing. Keep the accepted prescription, frame/insert identity, measurements, lens design, price and terms together. Ask when production starts and when you should expect delivery or collection.
  6. Check the finished glasses. Arrange the supplier’s final vision and fit check. For a display model, include its supported display setup. If something is unclear or uncomfortable, contact the fitter; do not change prescription values to try to solve it yourself.

What prescription details and measurements might you need?

Have a readable copy of your current spectacle prescription ready, with its date. Keep the right and left eyes separate, preserve plus/minus signs and include SPH, CYL and AXIS where present, the reading addition (ADD), and any prism and base details. Send it directly through the supplier’s chosen process; Smart Specs Check does not need a copy.

  • PD, or pupillary distance: ask whether the supplier needs a single distance or separate right/left measurements, and how it wants them obtained. PD is a dispensing measurement and is not part of the prescription itself, according to the College of Optometrists. Its absence from your prescription card is not a zero value.
  • Fitting heights: the position of your pupils relative to the chosen frame can be needed, particularly for varifocals. A prescription card alone does not provide this information. ABDO explains frame-specific measurements; Lensology’s FAQ describes its own process.
  • Other measurements as worn: the supplier may need the lens-to-eye distance, frame tilt or wrap for the chosen lens design. Let the fitter decide and take the measurements; they are not universal numbers to copy from another pair. Source: ABDO.
  • Display size and setup: confirm any model-specific size or IPD setting as well as the measurements used to make your prescription lenses. Neither replaces the other.

Do not estimate missing values or reuse fitting heights from an unrelated frame. Ask the supplier to resolve unclear entries before manufacture.

Published fitting routes by exact model and supplier

These examples explain the ordering process; they are not a complete supplier directory. Each row applies only to the model and route shown. A source-check date records a review of the published page, not direct supplier confirmation or approval.

On a small screen, scroll the table sideways, or focus it and use the arrow keys. UK listings do not confirm frame stock, prescription-lens stock or a delivery date.

Replacement lenses versus prescription inserts

Replacement lenses take the place of the existing lenses in a supported frame. The fitter may need your glasses, or a supplier may offer a service for customer installation. For example, Lensology describes Click & Fit for Ray-Ban Meta, without sending the frames in. That describes this independent service, not a general permission to remove smart-glasses lenses. Source: Lensology.

A prescription insert is a separate corrective unit used with the device’s optics. Confirm whether the quote includes both the carrier and the finished prescription lenses. XREAL says the lens frames differ between One, One Pro, Air 2 series and Air, so an insert from a similarly named pair is not a substitute. Source: XREAL.

Some display glasses need a different manufacturing route. Even describes the G2 prescription lens and display waveguide as a bonded unit. Ask Even or the relevant optician about prescription changes rather than assuming an ordinary replacement-lens service applies. Source: Even Realities.

For a quick comparison of the terminology, see inserts versus glazed lenses.

Display alignment is an additional check

XREAL’s One series guide gives One Pro M a supported display IPD range of 57–66 mm and One Pro L a range of 66–75 mm. It also describes nose-pad, temple-angle and display-IPD adjustments. Check the device version before ordering and use the manufacturer’s instructions for it. These device ranges are not prescription-power limits. Source: XREAL One series guide.

Even says a skilled optician can adjust G2 nose pads and temples. Ask for the physical fit and display view to be checked together; this does not mean another display model can be adjusted in the same way. Source: Even Realities.

Questions about astigmatism, stronger prescriptions and varifocals

If your prescription includes astigmatism

Ask: “Have you checked my sphere, cylinder and axis together for this exact route?” Then ask whether the quoted limit is separate SPH/CYL or a combined-power rule. Use the existing cylinder-limit comparison by model, supplier and country; this guide does not repeat that table. An unpublished limit means you need confirmation, not that the limit is zero or unlimited.

If your prescription is stronger or includes prism

Ask the supplier to assess the complete prescription, proposed lens thickness and frame/insert fit before you commit. Confirm whether extra measurements or an appointment are required. If you get an outside-range result, follow the questions for a lens provider and the published prescription limits. We cannot decide a clinical alternative or whether prism will work for you.

If you wear varifocals

For glasses with a display, see our display-varifocal overview. It separates named UK optician services from manufacturer support that still needs supplier confirmation, with a check date for each source.

Ask: “Do you offer varifocals for this model in the UK, through this ordering channel? Who takes the fitting heights, and what happens if the finished lenses need attention?” Even G2 illustrates the distinction: Even’s online prescription orders are single vision; progressive and UltraFit lenses go through optician partners. See Even’s FAQ and our varifocal comparison.

UK ordering, appointments, lead times, returns and warranty

Confirm that the seller can fulfil your prescription order in the UK, even if it lists the frame for sale. Ask who supplies the lenses, where fitting happens and who handles aftercare. Use the UK overview and availability tracker for dated model information, then check the lens route separately.

  • Appointments: establish whether measurements, a demonstration and collection need separate visits. John Rose Eye Care requires an in-person G2 fitting appointment; that requirement belongs to this practice’s service. Source: John Rose Eye Care.
  • Timing and price: separate lens production from postage and include the frame/carrier, lenses, fitting, delivery and any import charges in the quote. John Rose’s G2 guide gives approximately 4–6 weeks for prescription orders. Ask for the current estimate for your order; it is not a promise for other G2 suppliers. Source: John Rose Eye Care.
  • Returns and remakes: ask which cancellation, change-of-mind and remake terms apply to custom lenses as well as the frame. XREAL’s UK One Pro lens page has a custom-product no-return notice, even though the site also displays a general returns banner. Ask how faults or incorrect supply are handled; a general banner does not settle the lens-order terms. Source: XREAL UK.
  • Warranty and fitting damage: separate the lens supplier’s cover from the frame/electronics manufacturer’s warranty. Ray-Ban’s UK FAQ says manufacturer warranty is retained for later prescription-lens fitting at its certified retailers. Do not assume an independent service has the same status. Ask who covers damage during installation. Source: Ray-Ban UK.

Keep the written confirmation and receipt. For imports, ask about the return address, shipping costs and local aftercare before ordering.
